The first thing a person must do is under stand how the fuel injection pump works as well as the injector. ( How A diesel Works)
Caution Injection pumps develop High pressure and injection hazards are present when working around fluids over 30psi!!!
If you hand is injected with fuel oil it basically rots off. Icky! Enough said on safety be careful

Step 1: Determine the diameter of the flywheel 23.5 in most 6-1 (measure across the center of the flywheel)
Step 2: Multiply the Diameter 23.5 times 3.1415 other wise known as pi
3.1415 X 23.5=73.82" This is the distance all the way around the flywheel or the circumference
we need to determine a relationship of circumference in inches to degrees of a circle . There is 360' in a circle and a circle has a circumference.
Step 3: Divide the 73.82 inches by the 360 degrees
73.82/360=.205inches
This means that every .205" inches around the flywheel equals 1' degree of engine rotation So .205"= 1'
The engine times to 21' btdc ( before top dead center) as per my literature.
Step 4: multiply .205 X 21 = 4.307 "
This is the distance before top dead center that injection is suppose to start ( proper term is Port Closer )
Step 5: FIND TOP DEAD CENTER
Some say to take the head off the engine. You can do it this way and if you had the head off for some other reason this would be a convenient way to do it.
It is unnecessary to remove the cylinder head however to perform timing.
Remove the fuel injector from the head a
Cut a piece of 3/32 oxy rod 6 inches long solder on a screw that matches the thread in the stem of the indicator
Install the dial indicator and extension rod at an angle down through the injector hole (the rod must be positioned to move freely)
Set indicator so that the indicator deflects and shows the last 750" as the piston comes up to top dead center

Role engine in direction of rotation till the indicator (highest reading) stops moving and reverses directions continue till indicator reads .020 less than the highest reading
install pointer on engine and mark flywheel with scribe

Roll engine in opposite direction of rotation past the highest reading to .020 less than highest reading again mark flywheel with scribe.
Use dividers or compass or caliper to find the place in the center of the two marks (this is True Top Dead Center) mark flywheel with center punch for the future reference.
Step 6: Use compass or caliper to make a mark at 21' degrees clock wise from tdc mark on the flywheel (4.307 inches in our case)
