Detroit Diesel
A TRIBUTE TO AN ENGINE YOU EITHER SWEAR BY OR SWEAR AT..
Lets start off by putting a drip pan under you computer.
These engines leak and this page may start dripping any minute.
This page will be added to sooon

6-71 Low-Block with a Gray marine kit an engine that not unlike the Merlin had something to do with the out come of WW2

8V-71 Wet-Block
The engines looked at on these pages are of the two-cycle type that have a Roots type blower on them.
If you have been in the military or have fished or logged you have worked around them.
If you remember in the the movie U-571 the skipper is describing his dad's fishing boat to the Chief .
"Rotten to the gunnels, Stinks like fish. Noisy old two stroke diesel "
No problem with this was 1942-44 His two stroke was more than likely a 71
Just a small time problem if the 71 came out in the mid 30s his old two stroke would have been cutting edge tech.
The Detroit diesel came in two configurations V and inline
They came in a 53,71,110,92 and a 149 cubic inch per cylinder
An 8-V-71 is Eight cylinders in a V configuration of 71 cubic inches per cylinder
A 6-71 is six cylinders inline of 71 cubic inches per cylinder
The in line 71 series included the 1,2,3,4,6-71 1-6 cylinder no five cylinder (started in the mid 30s)
The V -71 series included the 6V,8V,12V and 16V (two 8Vs bolted together)
The in line 53 series included the 2,3,and a 4 cylinder
The V-53 series included a 6 and a 8V-53
The 110 inline series consisted of a 6-110
The V92 series consisted of the 6V-92, 8V-92, 12-92 and the 16V-92 (Two 8Vs bolted together)
The V 149 consisted of a 12V-149 and a 16V-149
The 71 series used a dry slip fit sleeve
The 53,92,110 used a partially wet liner
The 71 series came out in the mid 30s
Detroit Diesel was the first to use a two piece piston ( Crosshead piston)
Detroit Diesel was used unit injectors from the start( new diesels are using electronic unit injectors)
Detroit was direct injected from the start (did not use a pre cup)
Three of the 6 cylinder engines like above were used in WWII navy landing craft
