In this world of foul able man things sometimes get misassembled and this could be catastrophic.

This goes for fuel pump assemblies as well.  Before you start  any diesel you are unfamiliar with or has not ran for a long time, one should make quite certain the fuel can be shut off. this being done normally by the injector pump and governor in a team. Most engines have a shut down lever attached  to the pump or pushing on a lever in the case of the listeroid.

In the case of the listeroid  prime the engine. With the shut down lever in the "run"  position listen for the squawk of the injector when engine is turned with no compression. Good this means that fuel is being injected. More important however turn the engine over with the shut down  lever in the "stop" position listen that squawk goes away. This shows that  the engine can be controlled and shut down.  If there is still a squawk then YOU HAVE A PROBLEM !    DO NOT START THE ENGINE!!

A diesel engine can double it's rpm every second

This means that parts are going to be flying in a matter of 3-4 seconds from start up if controls are not working.

Changfa engines Put throttle lever  in the "run" position and crank engine by had with compression off listen for the squawk. Place throttle lever in the stop position and listen for no squawk..

On other types of engines where a squawk can not be heard due to starter noise, loosen all  injector lines  and watch for a squirt in the run mode and no squirt in the stop mode thus confirming control of the injector pump ( work on the end of a wrench as pressures we are dealing with far exceed the injection hazard pressures) .

On a Detroit diesel two cycle engine a valve cover should be removed and the rack checked for free travel. Make certain that rack pulls out al the way when the shut down lever is pulled. . (remember full fuel is all the way in ) A little water and varnish will stick racks without warning.

A stuck injector can hold the rack in full fuel and thus over rev the engine to destruction.

Also pull an air box cover off to make sure that it is not filled with water or oil. Detroits are not picky they will run on their own engine oil.

A few notes from an "expert" Always start questionable engines by  rolling an engine with the starter in the no fuel position and look for  no smoke

Then move to the run position  and look for smoke.

Last but not least a board should be kept handy to put over the air intake in the event of a emergency. Air intakes should be disassembled and made so a board could shut off air to and engine in the event of  a runaway.

Save the people, but save the engine. Work safe and be safe
